Family History and Research

Here at the museum, we can help you find out more about individual soldiers who served with the regiment.

We hold the official war diaries for each battalion of the Green Howards during the First World War plus some war diaries for the Second World War.

We also have a wealth of supporting official and unofficial documents, which often contain unique information on individuals.

For some periods of the Regiments history we also have enlistment registers, records of births and marriages and punishment books. This material varies in the amount of information available about individuals. Personal memoirs, diaries and letters exist from most periods, and we are, of course, strong on regimental history and information about uniforms.

Our extensive photograph collection is also a great resource both for images of named individuals and to illustrate a particular period.

Have a look at some of the family history research we have completed to get an idea of how the museum can help you research your Green Howard.

We can therefore often help in family history research, but there are sometimes limitations; we do not hold the full army personnel service records. If after a search of our archives, we find that we cannot help an enquirer, we will offer advice on the most fruitful alternative approaches available.

In order to get the best value from our research, enquirers should add as much information as possible to the downloadable Research Application Form. Try to include:

  • Dates of service
  • Regimental Number if known
  • Battalion if known

Alternatively you can contact us using our online Research Enquiry Form.

Fees

Fees for research are used to fund the conservation and maintenance of the museum and its archives.

The charge for an initial enquiry is £29, payable in advance. This is based on one hour of research for relevant information and the preparation of a response.

Timescale

We aim to answer enquires within six weeks, but occasionally enquires can take longer.

Conducting your own family history research

You are welcome to make an appointment to conduct your own research.

Our research centre is open Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm (Saturdays by special arrangement).

Please contact us to arrange an appointment.
